Governors

We are committed to creating a safe, caring and successful environment, empowering students to achieve their full potential during their time at our school.

Welcome to the section of the website where you can find out more about the school’s Governors, and the work that we do.

Our main role is to support the Headteacher and the staff – the phrase often used to describe this role is ‘a critical friend’. We help them to set and reach targets and to strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of school life.

The two key documents used for this are:

  • School Action Plan sets out the strategic plan for the school, with targets that everyone works towards
  • Self Evaluation Form (SEF) sets out how well the school is doing and where we aim to make improvements

Our legal duties include:

  • setting strategic direction, policies and objectives
  • approving the school budget
  • reviewing progress against the school's budget and objective
  • appointing, challenging and supporting the Headteacher

Governors discharge these responsibilities, together with many others, through a Full Governing Body meeting each term. These meetings are supplemented by termly sub-committee meetings dealing with more specific issues. The governing body has two sub-committees to focus on different areas:

Curriculum & Pastoral Committee

This committee meets once a term to carry out Governing Body responsibilities in relation to curriculum and pastoral issues. The committee reviews and monitors relevant areas such as pastoral and curriculum structures, exclusion and attendance patterns, pupil achievement against set targets, and also reviews key policies on topics such as pupil behaviour, anti-bullying, race and equality, sex & relationships education, and many others.

Finance, Staffing & Premises Committee

This committee meets once a term to carry out governing body responsibilities in relation to Finance, staffing and premises issues. The committee has responsibility for oversight and approval of the annual school budget, and throughout the year reviews and monitors budget related issues, income and expenditure and other finance topics, through regular briefings from the Headteacher or Strategic Site & Finance Manager. The committee monitors and approves the school's staffing structure and pay scales as well as the school's arrangements for staff induction, CPD and support for trainee teachers. Staff attendance and sickness patterns are also monitored via briefings from the Strategic Business Manager, and the committee also reviews and approves key policies such as Capability (teachers/support staff), teacher appraisal, disciplinary, grievance, leave of absence, safer recruitment, and many others.

Our Governors

There are several categories of governor, appointed by different groups that have an interest in the school. These are co-opted Governors, Local Authority Governors, Parent Governors and Staff Governors (including the Headteacher). All Governors have equal status no matter which type of governor they are. A number of Governors also have responsibilities for specific issues within the school such as Special Educational Needs (SEN), safeguarding and financial controls.
