GCSE English in Action

On 25th November 2020, a group of Year 9 pupils participated in an online workshop ‘GCSE English in Action’ in which they were able to watch a series of talks about the GCSE English curriculum. Pupils were exposed to a range of different ideas that they could take on into the coming years of their education.

Kate Clanchy, a very successful teacher gave advice and tips on how to read and write poetry. Pupils were also able to learn simple but effective tricks to help them when they are ‘Exploring non-fiction texts.’ There was also a little insight on how to answer exam questions for both Literature and Language questions.

Finally, pupils were able to listen to the well-known Welsh poet Owen Sheers read some of his work. He is important for the pupils as he is a feature in the AQA Poetry Anthology in which he wrote the poem ‘Winter Swans.’ This will be studied by the pupils when they are in Year 10. Hearing him talk about his work allowed pupils to understand the context and reasons for why he wrote the poem, which is a huge benefit for them when discussing this poem in the classroom.

Overall, pupils had a great time as they had a real advantage on the knowledge they needed for the next two years of their education in English.
