Duke of Edinburgh Training Weekend

This weekend 10 girls from Year 10 and Year 11 successfully completed their first Duke of Edinburgh training weekend at Burwarton. The weekend began on the Friday evening, where the girls were dropped off close to the campsite and had to carry their equipment there. This provided the first opportunity to work on their map reading skills and also how heavy their rucksacks are! On arrival at the campsite, the girls had to cook their own meals (there were a lot of noodles!!) and sort out their tents before enjoying a bit of free time to get to know each other better.

Duke of Edingburgh Training Weekend

Surprisingly, the girls got a relatively early night and most seemed to sleep well. After taking down their tents and repacking their rucksacks, they began their day walk. The walk lasted approximately 5 hours with each girl having a chance to lead the group to a designated point using their map reading skills. On returning to camp, it was their turn to pitch their tents before cooking their meals. After some monopoly, multiple games of hide and seek and “scary” ghost stories in their tents, it was time for another night’s sleep.

On the Sunday morning, each tent had to be packed away, toilets cleaned, rubbish collected and van packed before heading back to school.

All the girls thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and went home with a big smile on their face and looking forward to a comfy mattress and a hot shower.
