Digital Media

Tab 1

Digital Media - KS4

Digital Media is a completely new qualification that has recently been introduced to the curriculum. Considerable investment has been made and there is now three custom built rooms that have been fully equipped to ensure success. Digital media is similar in nature to photography but there is emphasis on the moving image. You will be introduced to video recording and computer animation.

At the start of each new project, you will be given a theme and a brief that outlines what you will need to do. You will learn the processes involved in digital media and become more confident at taking photographs and working with a variety of computer packages that include ‘I can animate’. Importantly, if you work hard and follow the program of study, the faculty is confident that you can achieve a Grade C or higher.

Course specifications: www.edexcel.com

The course consists of 60% coursework and 40% Externally Set Assignment. Coursework is graded on four assessment objectives and you will be expected to produce an A2 folder throughout the two years in order to evidence your developing skills and ideas.

Assessment Objective One: Critical and contextual studies (25% of coursework grade)

You will learn about the work of leading artists and photographers and animators whose ideas and working methods influence you. Although most of the research is completed visually, you will also need to support your ideas in writing. You will get help from your teachers to ensure that you feel confident about developing clear understanding about this objective.

Assessment Objective Two: Developing ideas and uses of materials (25% of coursework grade)

This objective is arguably the most exciting and will introduce you to new techniques: you will be offered the opportunity to develop your ideas digitally, and will become confident about using different types of equipment to produce animations and moving images. You will learn how to use technology with confidence and will develop skills valuable to the photography industry.

Assessment Objective Three: Recording from a range of experiences (25% of coursework grade)

You will record images from a range of experiences and learn different methods of producing high quality images. Trips will also be offered in order to help you develop an interesting and varied portfolio of work.

Assessment Objective Four: Producing a final outcome (25% of coursework grade)

All of your ideas are developed into a final product that is completed digitally and will reflect the work you have developed throughout your folder.

The Externally Set Assignment is issued in February of Year 11 and you will be give approximately ten school weeks to complete a folder of work. The exam itself is ten hours and will take place over two days. It is graded in exactly the same way as the coursework.

Studying this course will provide you with many opportunities including: access to level 3 BTEC courses or A Levels, apprenticeships in the photography industry and further education in digital studies or media. It also helps in any course where it is beneficial to produce photographs; these courses include hairdressing, floristry, construction, gardening, teaching, fashion and journalism to name a few. Additionally this qualification will be exceptionally advantageous in any career where you are expected to be confident at using computers.
